RPG Design Worksheets

Whenever I run workshops to teach new tabletop game designers, I produce a set of worksheets to help them explore their ideas. The latest iteration of these sheets are now ready for people to use and enjoy.

The PDF document presented below contains a total of 6 letter-sized worksheets which you can print on a home printer. Each of these pages addresses a different area of design and should be a useful aid in starting a conversation. Each of the sheets has a list of questions for the designer to answer.

  1. The Concept of the game, why it exists.
  2. The System, the rules and procedures of play.
  3. The Setting, or the fictional context of play.
  4. The Situation, or the reason that the characters are acting.
  5. The Subtext, or how the game relates to real world concerns.
  6. The Production, planning how the game can be manufactured and shared.

Scribus for RPG Layout – A Template

Since I released my video on RPG layout , I have gotten a number of comments and subscriber who were interested in more resources. Since I am currently in the midst of procrastinating prior to GenCon 2016, I thought I would pull together a quick Scribus template for that other people could use to get started.

There is a zip file Scribus Template which includes the full Scribus file, all of the free (open-source) fonts, and a sample image I created. That scribus file has a handful of pages laid out with example text, including an inner cover page, credits page, table of contents, and a couple of main content pages. This also includes a number of paragraph styles (header 1, header 2, header 3, body text, example text) and character styles (emphasis, small cap emphasis) that can be used to get started. The basic fonts used for this document work together, have a variety of weights, and generally look professional. I encourage you to use this as a baseline to get started in laying out your own games.

GameChef 2015 – Le Lustre des Libellules

Le lustre des libellules est un jeu optimiste et plein d’espoir. Au cours de chaque session du jeu, chaque joueur joue le rôle d’une libellule. Chacune des libellules bénéficie d’un talent particulier pour aider ses copines et pour pourvoir à ses besoins. Chaque libellule est motivée par son Rêve, la Quiétude et le désir d’abandonner ses Faiblesses. Elle utilise ces trois motivations pour échapper aux dangers et pour résoudre des conflits avec les autres libellules.

Au cours du jeu, elle va satisfaire ses motivations par l’utilisation de ces Rêves, sa Quiétudes ou ses Faiblesses. Le joueur établira une partie de la personnalité d’une nymphe de la prochaine génération. Éventuellement, les vieilles libellules sont remplacées par les jeunes nymphes et le jeu continu.

Dans « Le lustre des libellules », on essaie de créer une expérience bucolique, qui célèbre la beauté naturelle et la valeur des milieux humides. On prend soin de partager et d’explorer l’innocence des jeunes libellules pour créer des histoires familiales. De plus, on peut utiliser le jeu comme une occasion de faire un commentaire social et métaphorique, afin d’ajouter de la profondeur pour les joueurs adultes. Les deux grandes inspirations ludiques sont The Warren de Marshall Miller et Golden Sky Stories de Ryo Kamiya.
