What is “Spark”?

Spark is at its core, a storytelling toolbox meant to enable a wide variety of games to be played. It provides all of the implements necessary for a storyteller to run any setting with a minimum of effort. It gives the players in that campaign the tools to craft their own unique characters, limited only by their imaginations.

Spark can be thought of being inherently genre neutral. Rather then hardcode a single setting into the game system, the game instead is designed so that almost any setting or source material may be used with it. The first half of the core book is all that will be necessary for a player within the game, including the character creation process and all of the rules, and this will be provided free of charge in PDF form. This free content, combined with the free settings which will be on the website for download, will be enough to play without spending a dime.

If you are interested in running Spark frequently, you may wish to consider getting the full corebook in PDF or dead-tree variety. The second half of the corebook contains a detailed explanation of the setting-creation process, so that you may transform almost any kind of source material into a playable campaign setting. It additionally contains a chapter dedicated to hacks for the game system so that you may customize the experience to match your desires. There is also some useful plug’n'play npc’s, creatures, items and locations which can be freely used for your games. When you add in the four settings also provided in the corebook, it may be a worthwhile investment.

Let me be the first to tell you that this game is not made to be all things for all people. Spark was meant to tell stories in a dynamic fashion, providing intellectual and philosophical challenges. It is made to be fast, clean and fun for all involved. The amount of detail in the mechanics is rather limited and the game provides a rather poor simulation of reality. Instead, Spark is here to help running a variety of different games with a focus on stories. The game is made to support proper protagonists of the literary tradition, of particular value to games in the style of fantasy, horror or sci-fi novels.

Status Report
The first half of the book has been written in a first draft format and is currently undergoing playtesting. The character creation system has been tested and we are preparing to run the system through the gauntlet. With six months of playtesting, the content should be finalized and the editing process will start in truth.

The storyteller content in the second half of the book is currently being written as we speak. Likewise, some of the art is currently on the easels of our fine artists right now. Plans are underway for layout work and a commissioned cover. More information will be provided as the process moves forward.
